The Golden Citrus, LEMONS!
Luscious lemon season will soon be upon us with peak time in the Summer! These gorgeous “balls of sunshine” are jam packed full of oh-so-good-for-your-body nutrients and antioxidants. Some of the notable nutrients are: potassium, Vitamin C, limonins (intrinsic compounds to lemons), and folate-who knew?! This wonderful citrus strengthens your immune system, while the folic acid has a link in decreasing cardiovascular disease, by lowering the body’s homocysteine levels (an amino acid that elevates cardiovascular disease). Some added benefits, it destroys free radicals within your body and lowers LDL levels (bad cholesterol), and the citric acid in lemons deters kidney stones. So what about the limonin we mentioned earlier? The limonin plays an integral part in “fighting nasty” cancer cells! Finally to round it all up, lemon juice slims down your waist; and let us not forget about neural development the folate plays in the fetus’ brain development! Again, every situation boasts of some negative aspects, so be weary if you have sensitive tummies’ because lemon juice can create acid reflux, and lemon juice has the ability to break down teeth enamel. We hope that you’ll add lemons to your grocery cart more often, and when life gives you lemons, squirt it in someone’s eyes, WE MEAN, ummm, MAKE LEMONADE! 😉 haha! Enjoy!
